The name says it all: A "hybrid" is
a mix of two breeds. A
relatively new club on the
market, it's part fairway wood,
part long iron. The clubheads,
which come in different shapes
depending on the brand,
generally resemble shrunken
fairway woods, or fat irons.
A hybrid's shaft length is
somewhere in between the two.
The clubhead's center of gravity
(CG) is lower and deeper than
that of an iron, which gives the
hybrid the ability to provide a
quicker launch and a higher,
more controlled trajectory. The
ball drops back down to the
ground at a steeper angle than a
long iron, and sometimes even a
fairway wood, ever could. This
makes it easier to stop the ball
quickly on the green when
hitting long approach shots.
It's also an extremely versatile
club that works wonders when
playing trouble shots from the
rough, hardpan and sand (no
wonder hybrids have names such
as Rescue and CPR). In short,
the hybrid may look
unconventional, but it can also
take the anxiety out of some of
the toughest shots in golf.
